| The Year 2000 Challenge The new millennium -- when 1999 ends and 2000 starts -- presents a significant challenge for users of computer systems. This is because many computers (and computer programs) only track the least significant two digits of the year. For example, these systems would represent the year 1999 as 99, whilst the year 2000 would be stored as 00. This means that at 12:00 midnight on New Years Eve 1999, many computers (and computer programs) will mistakenly believe that time is running backwards. That is, these systems will believe that the new year is 1900 instead of 2000. This widely reported crisis, known variously as the "Year 2000 Problem," the "Millennium Bug," or simply "Y2K" is a significant issue. The problems associated with Y2K potentially include widespread date processing malfunctions and even computer system failures. EPE Online is Y2K Compliant The one thing you can be certain of in an uncertain world is that we're on top of the situation. The subscription database employed by EPE Online is Y2K (and buzzword) compliant, which means that you will be able to enjoy the latest issues of our magazine (even as the rest of civilization collapses around us). Mission-Critical? If you are performing "mission-critical" tasks and are concerned about the Y2K problem, you are advised to contact your hardware and software suppliers. |
