Musical Sundial
Approx cost US$65
This rather whimsical project monitors the motion of the sun using a pointer to cast a shadow that rotates with the sun. Sensors in an arc detect the position of the shadow, and when a sensor is completely covered by the shadow, electronically generated musical chimes and pips mark the hour of the event, one pip for each hour past. Then you get a tune played! But that's not all, on any day when the weather's changeable, with the sun coming and going, appropriate phrases of the "tune" mark the disappearance or re-appearance of the sun. There's no shadow of a doubt that you'll have fun with this musical garden gnomon!
This project originally appeared in the June 1999 issue of EPEOnline. >> PURCHASE <<
